Franli Meintjes solo exhibition |
National Arts Festival |
Franli Meintjes's first solo exhibition brings together subject matter and techniques that have characterized her work over the past few years into a reflection on personal potential and the artist's journey.
Popcorn is a sustained metaphor throughout the work, as an otherwise common place commodity that contains a truly remarkable potential for transformation; and the chicken, a lowly creature that spends most of its time stooped over the ground but nevertheless incubates the potential for new life.
A high degree of craftsmanship and finish characterizes Meintjes's work, and she invites reflection on her process of creating, of embracing her 'mistakes' and reworking them. Letting go of the need for perfection and embracing those parts of ourselves we wish to reject becomes a means to liberate our potential for new life.
